SUMMARY:Talk Tuesday: A New Mexican Burial
DESCRIPTION:Artist and filmmaker JC Gonzo reviews the unique evolution of New Mexico’s burial practices and how they’ve shaped the cemeteries we see today. New Mexican cemeteries distinctly embody the history\, landscape\, and material culture of the region in complex and nuanced ways. This talk will discuss burial challenges of the past and present as sites today face constant change with new practices\, economic patterns\, and migration influencing them. Gonzo will share work from his ongoing multimedia project A New Mexican Burial\, including documentary segments featuring the historic cemeteries of Sierra County\, and others. \nJC Gonzo (b. Juan Carlos Gonzalez\, 1989\, USA) is an artist\, writer\, and filmmaker based in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. He is originally from Anthony\, New Mexico. Gonzo acquired a self-designed BA at the College of Santa Fe\, 2008-11. He was a recipient of the Fulcrum Fund award in 2022 for his artist-showcase zine\, Cuidado\, and in 2024\, he was an artist in residence at The Ranch Residency in La Madera\, New Mexico. His work has been exhibited at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, CENTER\, Modified/Arts\, and elsewhere. In 2025\, he was the recipient of The City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department’s “Art is the Solution: Cultural Futures” award for his ongoing project\, A New Mexican Burial. \nRegister here | General Admission: $0

Initiated into the Mexhica tradition as OmeXiuhcoatl (2 Spirit Fire Serpent)\, D’Santi has been a member of Kalpulli Teocalli Ollin since 2010. D’Santi carries the sacred saumero\, conch\, sacred Eagle feathers\, sacred pipe\, is a fire guardian and certified aromatherapist. In 2026\, all birders can join us for Early Bird Wednesdays with exclusive direct access to the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve from 7am-10am. Bring your binoculars\, and water bottles\, and be sure to wear your hats and comfortable shoes. \nThis event is included with the price of museum admission\, and all El Rancho de Las Golondrinas members get in free with a reservation. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Parking permitted in the lot off W Frontage Rd until 10am. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to begin to learn New Mexico’s traditional embroidery style colcha with world renowned colcha artist Julia Gomez and fellow El Rancho de Las Golondrinas colcha artists Michelle Montano and Barbara Alba. Colcha is an historic folkart brought to New Mexico by the Spanish. Born out of necessity to help mend linens while stretching materials\, it is known for its distinctive yarn saving stitch. Colcha is an important part of our hands-on Museum interpretation and an artform we hope endures for years to come.
