Artist and filmmaker JC Gonzo reviews the unique evolution of New Mexico’s burial practices and how they’ve shaped the cemeteries we see today. New Mexican cemeteries distinctly embody the history, landscape, and material culture of the region in complex and nuanced ways. This talk will discuss burial challenges of the past and present as sites today face constant change with new practices, economic patterns, and migration influencing them. Gonzo will share work from his ongoing multimedia project A New Mexican Burial, including documentary segments featuring the historic cemeteries of Sierra County, and others.
JC Gonzo (b. Juan Carlos Gonzalez, 1989, USA) is an artist, writer, and filmmaker based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is originally from Anthony, New Mexico. Gonzo acquired a self-designed BA at the College of Santa Fe, 2008-11. He was a recipient of the Fulcrum Fund award in 2022 for his artist-showcase zine, Cuidado, and in 2024, he was an artist in residence at The Ranch Residency in La Madera, New Mexico. His work has been exhibited at the New Mexico Museum of Art, CENTER, Modified/Arts, and elsewhere. In 2025, he was the recipient of The City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department’s “Art is the Solution: Cultural Futures” award for his ongoing project, A New Mexican Burial.
