Baca Placita
Built in the early 1800s, the Baca House shows the transition from the Mexican period into the American territorial period. Typical of many New Mexican homes of the time the Baca House was built and added on to over time having two rooms and a central hallway. The architecture shows a mix of traditional New Mexican techniques and American building materials from the Santa Fe trail trade.
The placita architecture itself shows a transition in the 19th century from defensive to much more open. At the tiendita (general store) and la hojalateria (tin shop) we see the beginning of trade as the Santa Fe trail opened up and the train came to town, expanding what goods the average New Mexican could possess.
