Schoolhouse

The Ratón Schoolhouse was brought here from Ratón and shows what one-room schoolhouse education looked like in 19th-century New Mexico. This building dates to 1885 and includes attached teacher’s quarters. Here you learn about the history of education in New Mexico, and the conversion to English language instruction in the early 1900s during New Mexico’s bid for statehood. You will also have the opportunity to sit in school desks of the time and learn about a Spanish language schoolhouse that existed on the museum property in the late 1800s.
